Betty J. Alverson was Director of the Watkins Student Center at Furman University and the founder, along with student leaders, of the Collegiate Educational Service Corps (now the Heller Service Corps).  She influenced generations of students to, as she put it, “do good work.”  Among those whose lives she deeply influenced was our founder and president, Bishop Stacy Sauls.  The work she did made the lives of countless people in the Greenville, South Carolina immeasurably better.

Betty Alverson died in May 2019.  A Memorial Service was held in the Daniel Chapel at Furman on October 20.  The service bulletin and a video recording of the service are available by clicking on the associated links.

Bill Alverson, Betty’s son, has requested that gifts in his mother’s memory for carrying on her work be made to:

PO Box 2343

Cashiers, NC 28717-2343

The Betty Alverson Memorial Fund will be used to support the work of Love Must Act in making educational opportunities available to poor children.  We hope to dedicate the clinic at the Holy Cross School in Grahamstown, South Africa, a project Betty was deeply interested in, in her memory ($35,000) and, if funds are available, the Resource Center ($35,000).

We also plan to launch the Betty Alverson Service Program to introduce the principles Betty lived by inviting recent high school graduates, recent college graduates, and retired persons to  make short-term  or long-term commitments to volunteer in Love Must Act education programs.

Gifts may be made by check to the address above or here:
